Lawyers are expensive. I used an immigration attorney when I applied for my Green Card because I'd had some difficulties getting my original work visa and didn't want to mess with the scary INS. Besides the crazy INS filing fees, I ended up paying close to $4000 in fees to my attorney.
Since my application was based on a marriage that was less than 2 years old, I was given a conditional green card that was valid for 2 years. It just came up for expiration and my attorneys sent me a pleasant email asking me if I'd like them to file the petition to remove the conditions for the low price of $2000 plus filing fees.
I took a look at the INS website and realized that filing the petition involved one form and some supporting documentation like photos/lease/bank account info to prove that we're still married. I told the lawyer that I'd try to give it a shot on my own and if I ran into any difficulties, I'd call her.
It took about 5 minutes for me to fill out the form, 10 minutes to print out some pictures and a copy of our lease, a quick trip to the bank to get a cashier's check for the $550 filing fee and a trip to the post office to send the petition via certified mail. I am now staring at a shiny new green card. I would have been seriously pissed off if I had forked over $2k to have someone mail in some paperwork for me.
